Adobe Will No Longer Release Adobe Reader For Linux. However, Adobe Reader Is Still Installable On Ubuntu And Debian

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Adobe has decided to dropped the Adobe Reader support for the Linux platform, like they also did with Adobe Flash and Adobe Air.

Despite this, Adobe Reader 9.5.5 is still installable on the latest Ubuntu and Debian systems, being available via both the Adobe FTP and the Canonical Partner Repository.

To install Adobe Reader 9.5.5 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, you have to add the Canonical Partner repository for Precise, update the local repository index and install the acroread package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install acroread

To install Adobe Reader 9.5.5 on Debian Sid, Debian Jessie and Debian Wheezy, download the acroread deb package from the adobe ftp and install it via the command-line, along with the other needed libraries.

Instructions for 32 bit Debian systems:

$ wget ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ sudo gdebi AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
$ sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Instructions for 64 bit Debian systems:

$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
$ sudo apt-get update
$ wget ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ sudo gdebi AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
$ sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
